The Joy of Invitation

From the very beginning, God has been extending invitations to humanity. This God, who created everything out of nothing, brings the animals before the man to “see what he will call them“ (Gen. 2:19). Surely, God had not run out of creativity.

I once heard Andy Crouch say something to the affect that God put man in a garden but our ultimate destination is the City of God. He noted the difference between a garden and a city is that a city is cultivated by man. Wow!

This is God‘s plan for us.

God has invited humanity (yes, you and me) to not only steward His creation but to make something beautiful from it. Something that brings Him glory.

In spiritual direction we talk a lot about God’s invitations. I have come to love the gentle nature of the word: Invitation. God invites us to co-create with Him in our generation, in our little corner of the world.

Keep your heart and eyes open for invitations from God.

And do not fear! God has perfectly shaped you for the work He is inviting you into. It will not be ill-fitting like Saul’s armor (1 Sam. 17:38-40). It may challenge you; but remember… you were made for it (Eph. 2:10).

What invitations is God extending to you in this season of your life?
