"The Spiritual Exercises” is a 500-year-old retreat thousands of Christians have made over the centuries. You can do it in a cloistered setting like a monastery for 30 days, or if you can’t leave your responsibilities, you can do it at home by carving out about an hour daily for prayer and scripture meditation.
One of the lovely things about doing the retreat in daily life is that the scripture meditations and your time with God permeate your real life. Also, the meditations align with the church calendar, so you meditate on the incarnation during Advent leading up to Christmas and the journey to the cross during Lent leading to Easter. The retreat in daily life begins this year on Sept. 25 and runs through May 14. There are breaks at Thanksgiving and Easter.
This is one of the most life-transforming experiences I have ever had, and I cannot recommend it highly enough.
